New Look for 2012: Cowgirl Couture featured at Rodeo Drive and Saratoga Accessories in Louisville.
Finally, two of our friends lost their moms in 2011. Linda Davis lost her mom in the summer, and Dr. Jerry Bean lost his mom late fall. We are creating hats named after both, to honor their memories. One hundred percent of the proceeds from these two very special creations goes to charity.
Madam Foo Foo Couture hats and "FOOscinators" are designed in the Kentucky studio with the latest fashion trends and color palettes in mind. Long before Philip Treacy designed for Kate Middleton and the royal wedding, we were inspired by him. "He's elegantly outrageous!" according to Lisa Lake-Roedemeier. " I absolutely love his lines and his uncanny ability to balance whimsy and tradition." We also receive creative inspiration from God and music...in that order!
Founded in 2009, Madam Foo Foo Couture gives a portion of profits to thoroughbred rescue, retirement, and retraining. Madam Foo Foo is one of Lisa's former racehorses and a retirement success story (see below). Another of our retirees, Let's Go Mambo, has his own facebook page! We LOVE it.
The 2012 collection includes about fifty original handwoven pieces. The weaving process typically takes about two weeks. When the beautiful unfinished hat base arrives in the Kentucky Madam Foo Foo studio, it is embellished with love and given that little "twist of southern charm." Embellishments are always evolving and changing. Lots of hand-dyed silk ribbon and golden pheasant feathers along with the highest quality beads and stones adorn the latest creations. Feather trimming has been a trend this year; and handmade flowers have also been interesting and fun. Upon completion, each hat is named; and, those names are derived from family, horse racing, and the southern way of life. Last year we loved Grits at the Ritz, and Pink Freud (Freud is a stallion). This year Have a little Grace is on our minds as the Larry Jones trained Havre de Grace won an Eclipse Award in January! We also have a Francie Foo-scinator coming as Lisa's husband, Gary, has a beautiful new granddaughter from China.

MTG racehorse, Madam Foo Foo, in her stall at the Fairgrounds in 2010 |
Retired racehorse, Madam Foo Foo, getting a mint from her owner! |
Madam Foo Foo is a three-time winner and certainly no stranger to the cameras. She showed confidence on her "runway" and enjoyed the spotlight. Typical of a fussy girl, when she was racing she did not like to run in the mud; and, she hated to get dirt in her face. Of course, she was born and raised in the South.. so we'd expect nothing less!
Our beautiful girl retired in late 2010 from her racing career. She found a great home in Mississippi with a true southern belle. She's living the "plantation" life and is a true horse retirement success story.
Much like our beloved Madam Foo Foo, our creations are one-of-a-kind. Southern but sassy. Trendy? Some are. But we like to think we retain the sense of style that makes a southern lady in her gorgeous Madam Foo Foo hat the icon of unmistakable class and charm at the racetrack.

Take Charge Chenais |
Take Charge Lady was one of Kenny McPeek's finest horses and no stranger to the limelight or the winner's circle. She was the runner-up in the Kentucky Oaks in 2002, and won the Dogwood at Churchill Downs. She also won the Ashland, the Fair Grounds Oaks, and the Silverbulletday. Lovingly referred to at times as the "Queen of Keeneland," she truly was a force to be reckoned with in her day.
Chenais McConnell is a different type of icon. She is the daughter of our very dear MTG partners in New Hampshire. Having recently completed the first phases of her EMT training, Chenais found herself in a life and death situation recently when she was out for a social evening with her girlfriends. A man in his early to mid-forties fell to the ground suddenly and began seizing. He stopped breathing. The recently-graduated EMT sprang into action, barking orders to those around her - many ten or twenty years her elder. When the paramedics and ambulance arrived, Chenais had revived the gentleman sufficiently to keep him alive for the ride to the hospital. We understand he is now off the breathing machine and is going to live to see his children grow up.
Heroes and heroines come in all forms. The equine Take Charge Lady was a heroic athlete and an accomplished equine professional. The human Take Charge Lady, Chenais McConnell, is a shining star to all of us around her who are so proud of her efforts to selflessly help others. In her honor, the beautiful lemon-yellow hat you see in this picture is named "Take Charge Chenais."
A portion of all hat sale profits goes to thoroughbred rescue and retirement projects nationwide.
If you'd like to help give a racehorse a well-deserved and respectful life, right up to the ultimate "finish line," we'd love to see you in one of our creations! We'll be delighted to have you as a member of the "Sisterhood" of Madam FooFoo.
